Medical-Astrological Repertory and Materia Medica - Introduction

Who tries to find hints for medical diagnosis and therapy by means of astrology is still dealing with a matter which is not fully developed yet. It is certainly not untrue that the research which might lead to useful hints is still more or less in its beginnings or respectively has not yet been published.

The „PATTERNS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE ASTROLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS AND HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT OF ILLNESSES“ (Volume 1 and 2, published by Büro Döbereiner, Munich Rhythm Theory Press, Agnes-Bernauer Str.129, D-80687 Munich, Tel: +49-89-5805566, Germany) by Wolfgang Döbereiner which set up basic standards in astrological medicine and which has never been surpassed by any existing astrological work known to me in quality has been reprinted recently in German but was for a long time out of print.

The description of constellations in this book are to be classified as excellent and one can assume that Döbereiner wrote about experiences and constellations he had really checked and seen and that he did not – like some other authors – let speculation and imagination run wild since some constellations were missing in his homeopathy book. This illustrates that he only wrote about things for which he certainly had sufficient knowledge and experience. In many astro-medical publications you find complete cookery books of all constellations and remedies and you wonder how the author managed to obtain all this knowledge within his short span of life-time and within the frame of his even shorter astrological activity. With some security you may suppose that in many cases the judgement of the constellations is very insecure, respectively that the descriptions are most speculative. If you compare what kind of similiar publications about astrological medicine are and were available on the market (very extensive list of literature in the appendix) you will find that on the one hand in the field of astrological medicine most contradictory assignments of astrological constellations to remedies are existing and on the other hand this is also true for the assignments of symptoms to constellations. If you go into details of astrological medicine the differences between the various authors become immense.

Even though astrological descriptions of constellations with the corresponding circumstances of life, prenatal events and the appropriate psychosomatic correspondences in the work of Döbereiner are to be classified as excellent, doubts may arise concerning the assignments of remedies to astrological constellations, respectively the kind of astro-medical therapy.

In many points I came to divergent or more differentiated correspondences in assigning the remedies to the constellations, and I also think that a therapy should be focused more specifically to a smaller selection of suitable remedies.

If you start from the rule that every astrological constellation in the form of „factor x / factor y“ corresponds to one or several homeopathic remedies, there is the difficulty - with about 500 known homeopathic remedies treated in the common Materia medicas – that all of these remedies are not identical but each of them has a symptomatology of its own. If one tries to assign these 500 remedies to astrological constellations, you will find out by pure calculation that there cannot be as many different constellations as remedies if you only have constellations of two factors. With ten planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) there are only 9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 45 combinations possible.

The conclusion out of this is simple: Assignments of remedies to astrological constellations have to be quite more differentiated in order to describe the special nature of a remedy. Not only combinations of two factors but also assignments with combinations of three and more factors must result out of this.

The constellation Saturn/Neptune may serve as an example. It corresponds to the remedies Lycopodium as well as to Sepia according to the general view of the astro-medical practitioners in Germany who adopted this assignment from Döbereiner. But Lycopodium and Sepia are clearly distinguishable remedies - in essence as well as in symptomatology. What is the difference between them from an astrological standpoint ? After thorough studies of both remedies according to the proceeding of the new German homeopathy school of Bad Boll and according to the Greek School by Vithoulkas – both are recommended for the intense study of every astro-medical student – a clear essence can be recognized. This can also be expressed astrologically in form of constellations.

According to these recognitions Lycopodium might correspond to Saturn/Neptune, but it certainly corresponds additionally to Saturn/Uranus and Saturn/Mercury. Sepia on the other hand has beside the definitively existing Saturn/Neptune signature also a Uranus/Pluto signature. Only by this more subtle differentiation both remedy pictures become understandable and explainable, too. This also explains why there are so many homeopathic remedies: Since there is the possibility of the combination of different astrological constellations in every horoscope and thus the number of similia is increased enormously. As well as there is a fine distinction of each single remedy made in homeopathy, so should a homeopathically orientated astrological medicine distinguish accurately the astrological constellations, especially since the range of similia possibilites is quite wide.

Furthermore the question arises if really every constellation in a horoscope has to be covered by a remedy, also in case that the constellation is fulfilled by the horoscope owner according to the way fate has meant it to be, that means it is lived up to its positive side which I call its form of positive living.

In single cases it might be reasonable and correct to cover several constellations with several remedies at the same time so that the case would not be disturbed if a constellation had been neglected. It may possibly occur that a complex of constellations in the entire context remains not covered, just like Döbereiner has showed it e. g. in the second volume of his homoepathy book by the means of a dog´s case. But why should one not give the homeopathic remedy covering both or all constellations in question provided that there are remedies corresponding to several constellations ? On the other hand, the common and successful procedure in classical homeopathy is known to treat a single problem in the first place in order to apply other remedies in the course of treatment afterwards which deal with other themes later. By no means this needs not to end in endangering life and usually does not end like this but is the thorough observation of one problem at one time.

This technique is very well known in homeopathy, that is to ”work your way” from the superficial plane to the deeper levels, respectively to scratch the outer shell in the first place in order to approach the core later on. This technique postulates that a person´s problems are wrapped around each other like the peals of an onion. The chronical layers are the inner peal corresponding astrologically to the MC, respectively to the fourth quadrant and they could be named the chronical basis miasm. The peal in the middle of the onion are the problems that become acute in a middle-term of time corresponding astrologically for example to the position of the sun and to the second, respectively to the third quadrant. And only the outer, acute image – i. e. the perceptible outer peal of the onion – is the superficial image corresponding to the AC respectively to the first quadrant.

Of course, it is more elegant to treat the entire person with the sum of his problems at one time. Nevertheless in these cases the finding of the simile is often not easy. Then it might be more reasonable to work with clear and secure remedy assignments to astrological constellations and to operate with complex homeopathy therapy. As stated: Of course, a single remedy covering the entire complex is much more elegant.

Neither the one nor the other conception should be prefered though, they both have their advantages and disadvantages in certain respects.

At last: One should not practice homeopathy only from the astrological point of view but also submit it to homeopathic principles. Especially to keep in mind the investigation of the essence or the idea of a remedy as the central cardinal point, being astrologically the „constellation(s)“ of the remedy, seems to me more than necessary in astrological medicine. Especially the so-called School of Bad Boll and the Greek School according to Vithoulkas paved the way for this modern form of homeopathy.

In order to learn the essence and background of the homeopathic remedies beyond the conventional astrological point of view, I can only warmly recommend to everyone interested in these matters to study the abundantly available literature (indications in the appendix, unfortunately the literature of the Bad Boll School is not translated to English yet) in the first place independently on astrology and its conceptions in order to connect back a bridge to astrology later on in the course of these studies.

You will easily get caught in the pitfall of astrological dogma and you won´t obtain good results if you try to put the cart before the horse in astro-medicine and study astrology in the first place since the basis of observation and the recognition of the essence of each remedy is missing. Astro-medicine means astrology and medicine, respectively here mostly homeopathy, and to master both arts it is necessary to study both in-depth.

I hope to have made a start with this work which leads to the synthesis of both arts in the very sense of the word synthesis and that at the same time in the chapter „Using the Repertory“ I could show a practicable way how astrology is able to support a homeopathic case-taking and therapy.
